Series Scope and Content Summary
This series documents the political career of Norman Mineta, from his early service as Mayor of San José (1971-1975) through his long tenure as a member of the House of Representatives (1975-1995). Contents include Mineta's voting records, copies of his administrative policies and procedures, correspondence, meeting minutes, memoranda, newspaper clippings, political and campaign papers, publicity and financial records, and legislative profiles. This series highlights the range of legislative topics and include: new veteran homes, welfare reform, gun laws, health insurance, and drug testing. Mineta also served as a regent of the Smithsonian Institution. Mineta’s records, and this series document his involvement with the board and various committees. A portion of the collection depicts Mineta’s work in Intermodal Surface Transportation and the Social Security Administration. The bulk of this series relates to his Congressional career, and the collection does not include any materials from his cabinet appointments under President Clinton and President Bush.
