Transportation Department, 1994
Series Scope and Content Summary
Originally the constituent files consisted of 202 record boxes, organized according to alphanumeric filing scheme, and by subject files. Because of the personal nature of many of these files, the size of collection, and the projected research value, the alphanumeric records were destroyed, and only the subject files have been retained. The subject files represent all of the subjects covered in the alphanumeric files, thus reflecting the primary concerns of Edwards' constituents. The subjects relate to Edwards' work on the Judiciary Committee, its subcommittees, the Veterans' Affairs Committee, the Vietnam, civil rights, the Equal Rights Amendment, and other local concerns. Typical of constituent records, the collection includes general correspondence, crank mail, mail from students and educators, requests for flags, requests for assistance with official bureaucratic problems, letters supporting and opposing Edwards' work in Congress, and letters requesting his participation in local ceremonies, commencements, and other events.
