SERIES IV: Slides and Glass Plate Negatives, undated

 Series

Scope and Contents

This series contains 88 glass plate negatives, 109 projector slides, and 20 sleeved negatives. The glass plate negatives are predominantly scenes of college life and classroom activities. Most appear to date from around the 1940's or 1950’s, although some show images from the Normal School or Teacher's College period. A number of glass plates contain illustrations that may have been used in SJSC promotional materials such as Impact! The dynamic effect of San Jose College on the community it serves (San Jose State College, c. 1961) and Pioneers for one hundred years, San Jose State College (San Jose State College, 1957). Both publications are available in the San José State University Archives Publications Collection.

The majority of the slides were commercially produced by Castle Films and show scenes ranging from 1920’s automobiles to WWII era military maneuvers. Most of the Castle Films slides are titled. Slides not labeled with the Castle Films logo appear to be photographs that may have been taken by Dr. Bentel. These images include desert scenes and a few that may have been intended as pin-up shots. The sleeved negatives also may have been taken by Dr. Bentel and generally show a woman in a garden or the interior of a room.
