Second Backpacking "Knapsack" Trip, circa 1930-1940
Scope and Contents
This series' photographs depict the Coalinga oil fields, Ernest Cleary’s backpacking trips and his time as doctor of the Sugar Pine saw mill, portraits of relatives and friends, landscapes from family vacations and trips, Ernest Cleary’s postgraduate work and military training, and portrayals of the lives of his children and grandchildren. Also included are photos of the family’s homes. This series also contains some glass plate negatives, tintypes and other photographs that were removed from family albums. The photographs in this series illustrate the everyday life of a family in the early Coalinga oilfields, in the Sierra Nevada at Sugar Pine saw mill, and throughout the San Francisco Bay area. The series also documents the processes of orthopedic surgery during World War I.
