Giornale d'Italia, January 19-August 21, 2018
Scope and Content
This series consists of various Italian newspapers that have been translated into English. This series includes newspaper articles documenting Benito Mussolini's departure from the Socialist Party in August of 1914, and reflect his belief that entering the war would help further Italy and the Socialist Party, as well as free the Italians in Austria-Hungry from the rule of the Hapsburgs. Other articles document the position of King Victor Emmanuel III, who initially favored neutrality. Nonetheless, Italy declared war in May of 1915, siding with the Allied forces that included France, Great Britian, Japan, and the United States. The bulk of this collection deals with the political atmosphere of Italy prior to and during World War I.
