Scope and Contents

This series concerns the atrocities committed against Prisoners of War (POW) by the Japanese during World War II. The main content in this series relates to U.S. Government legislation sponsored by Mike Honda to address these issues via monetary reparations, and apologies from Japan. The series consists of legislation, news articles, committee papers, copies of the POW Act, previous lawsuits and resolutions, historical background information, and manuscripts, testimony, and letters from POW survivors and their families. Subseries 1: Consists of 35 folders concerning papers related to the bill HR1198, co-sponsored by Mike Honda, which requested Japan make amends for their role in atrocities committed against POWs during WWII. The papers include press releases, correspondence, testimony, fact sheets, historical background information, talking points, action plans, letters and statements of support and opposition, news articles, news programs, legal documents, and transcripts of hearings. Subseries 2: Consists of 10 folders of papers related to military veterans and related associations and organizations, containing booklets, press releases, a 45 record, testimony, support statements, and correspondence. Subseries 3: Consists of 3 folders of papers related to the Nazi War Crimes and Japanese Imperial Government Records Interagency Working Group (IWG), including Congressional records, correspondence, and Interim Reports. Subseries 4: Consists of 50 folders containing handwritten letters to Honda thanking him for sponsoring H.R. 1198, a resolution asking for Japan to make amends for their role in atrocities committed against POWs during WWII. In addition, this subseries contains contact lists, news articles (mainly attached to correspondence), a petition, and the written experiences of POWs. Subseries 5: Consists of 54 folders containing background materials on the subject of WWII POWs and forced labor, including correspondence, newsletters, news articles, a Cold War memorial calendar, previous United Nations treaties, trial and hearing transcripts, Congressional records and amendments, reports on WWII experiments on POWs by Japan and Germany, conference program details, previous resolutions, bills, and lawsuits, event flyers, Nobel Peace Prize nominations, press releases, statements from politicians, books and book excerpts, a journal, Union support papers, personal notes by Mike Honda, legal opinions, transcript of the 1951 Peace Treaty with Japan, declassified telegrams regarding internment camps, details of past POW payments, and the Bataan Death March commemorative papers.
