Series I. Personal Papers, 1917-1990

 Series

Scope and Contents

These personal papers primarily consist of Hermanns' correspondence with friends, family, acquaintances, and organizations. His mostly outgoing letters to Mabel Stonehill, his long-time confidant, are of particular interest in the correspondence, where he regaled her with moments in his life. Additionally, there is mutual correspondence with Lidine Belova, whom he later wrote a biography about, Archbishop Fulton Sheen, and Hermine Ruess of Greiss, the second wife of Kaiser Wilhelm II with whom he shared his poetry. At the same time, she lived in exile after WW I. Also documented in this collection are Hermanns' extensive exchanges with the Berlin Compensation Office (Entschädigungsamt Berlin), Fabian von Schlabrendorff, and Dr. Ottmar Menchow regarding reparations for losses suffered before, during, and after World War II. Other documents include the personal effects of Hermanns, such as financial records, passports, awards, resumes, and his obituary.
