The collection contains two hundred and eighty-nine postcards and one photo clipped from a newspaper, which are accompanied by sixteen handwritten pages of instructor’s notes pertaining to the use of the postcards as teaching aids. The collection focuses on early scenes of the Santa Clara Valley, including various schools (ex. Stanford University, San Jose State Normal School), churches and missions (ex. St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in San Jose), towns (including street scenes and municipal buildings), landmarks and points of interest (ex. parks, Lick Observatory), fruits and other valley produce, flowers, and more.
