Scope and Contents

This series consists of newspaper clippings, article drafts, the transcript of an interview with Tommie Smith and Lee Evans, the responses of Black athletes from a questionnaire conducted by Track & Field News, statements from the San Jose State College Department/Bureau, and handwritten statements from Lee Evans, Harry Edwards, and Tommie Smith. The materials in this series relate to the proposed boycott of the 1968 Olympic Games which encouraged Black athletes to refuse to participate for the purpose of protesting against the racial discrimination and segregation of Black athletes within the professional sports industry. The date range of this series is 1967-1972.
