San José State University School of Library and Information Science Records
Scope and Contents
The San José State University (SJSU) School of Library and Information Science (MLIS) Records document the administrative history of SJSU's MLIS program between 1957 and 2010. First accredited in 1969, the program's accreditation was not renewed by the American Library Associaiton (ALA) in 1975. Documents in the collection track the school's successful efforts to achieve reaccreditation and show the school's development and expansion since that time. The records also document the origins and advancement of the school's distance education program in Southern California, and the individuals and institutions contributing to that successful endeavor. This collection also includes materials by the school's different student associations between 1974-2008. The records contained in this collection consist of correspondence, administrative documents pertaining to accreditation, documents pertaining to curriculum, agendas and meeting minutes of campus committees, flyers for events, newsletters, brochures for conferences and workshops, videotapes, and photographs.

Historical Note
Started in 1929, the university’s Library Science Department originally focused on the education of school librarians. A Master's degree in Library Science program was created in 1954 and accredited by the American Library Association in 1969. The school began its distance education program in the late 1980s, initially offering classes at California State University, Fullerton, in 1989 and then expanding to other sites throughout Southern California, including Pasadena Public Library, California State University, Northridge, and California State University, San Marcos. As technology advanced, SJSU’s Master’s of Library and Information Science Program became a pioneer in online education, becoming a fully online program by 2009.
